The Temperament to Lead
A Women’s Month tribute to Kamala Harris and the judgment required in moments of escalation
Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Kamala Harris, during a public appearance, where preparation meets composure.
This year opens during an active military confrontation between the United States and Iran. Airspace closures. Strategic positioning. Markets reacting in real time. The stakes are high, and the consequences are unfolding in front of us.
Moments like this clarify what leadership requires.
A pause matters. It gives leaders space to assess consequences before action. Executive power demands discipline, judgment, and restraint.
Kamala Harris spoke about that responsibility throughout her campaign. During the debates, she addressed her opponent’s remarks about using the military against “the enemy from within.” She called that language dangerous and unconstitutional. The issue was not just political disagreement. It was about protecting democratic norms and keeping executive power within its limits.
At the time, many dismissed the warning as campaign rhetoric. As tensions rise, those words carry more weight, grounded in years of legal and executive experience.
Harris entered the race with a long record of public service. She served as a deputy district attorney, district attorney of San Francisco, attorney general of California, United States senator, and Vice President.
Despite that record, much of the public scrutiny focused on presentation instead of preparation. Her tone, delivery, and demeanor were examined in detail. She was expected to perform flawlessly in every appearance. Meanwhile, her opponent’s legal judgments and public transgressions were repeatedly reframed.
One candidate had to demonstrate perfection to be considered competent. The other was permitted instability without equal consequence. That pattern shaped how readiness was interpreted.
During the campaign, Harris focused on alliances, voting rights, national security, and democratic stability. She emphasized NATO partnerships and constitutional guardrails. Those priorities reflected experience inside the systems she worked to protect.
Experience shapes judgment. Harris entered the race with that depth of preparation and was still held to harsher standards. Her candidacy warranted full and fair consideration.
That level of preparation matters when executive decisions carry global consequences.
As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to unfold, the weight of executive judgment is visible. Leadership under pressure reveals temperament.
Kamala Harris demonstrated the temperament required to carry that weight.
That deserves recognition.
